Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Leadership Sovereignty Podcast. I'm your host Ralph Owens along with Terry Bailey. In today's episode, we'll touch on topics such as how EQ helps you to achieve your personal goals, the power of understanding your emotions and how you respond to others, why character matters, and the power of leveraging your life's experiences. Enjoy the show. Well, the the in the last point that that we'll touch on with emotional intelligence is, for personal growth.

Speaker 1:

Right? So the emotional intelligence and self awareness will help you again, like we talked about, understand your strengths and weaknesses. And, in doing so, it'll help you to achieve your personal goals. Right? Because again, I can't tell you how incredible it felt for me to really dig into my own emotions and say, you know what, when that person says this or when they when they say it a certain way, it makes me feel like this.

Speaker 1:

And then my corresponding, response is to act this way. Well, if I could just change the way I look at that or when I feel that way, know that, okay, this typically makes me have this kind of response. I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna have a different response. It's a powerful thing.

Speaker 1:

And when I started into we talk about this all the time. Sometimes well, first of all, you have to realize that you can't change anybody. Right? You don't have the power to go into their mind and their emotions and to change them. Nobody can.

Speaker 1:

Nobody can. God has the power and the ability to do so, but he doesn't even do Right? He allows you to make your own decisions. He gave us free will. But what we have learned is if you change the way you respond to a person, it can inherently make them change the way they act towards you.

Speaker 1:

So you learn we've learned through emotional intelligence that you know what? And and I'll give you a great example. It's it's more simplistic example, but it's still a good example. It's been said that when somebody's yelling at you, if you can just in turn yell back at them. Right?

Speaker 1:

It's the natural response. Right? But if you have emotional intelligence, you say to yourself, you know what? While this person's yelling, I'm gonna speak real quietly. Your decision to speak quietly causes them to bring their voice down because they can't hear you.

Speaker 1:

Right? They'll fact that you naturally want to yell back at them is called matching. You're basically trying to match what they're giving you. But what you do is you lower your voice and now they try to match what you're giving them. Right?

Speaker 1:

So your ability to have emotional intelligence and to to be in command of how you deliver to someone else has the ability to really change the outcome, right? Once you really, really understand it. I mean, any thoughts about that too?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I've heard similar things, right? I was speaking to a person who speaks quite a bit and does conferences and things like that. And one of the techniques he shared with me is when he wants to control the room, he gets up to the mic and he just comes in and when he, you know, making the point he wants to make, he gets really soft and what happens with the audience? They lean in.

Speaker 1:

That's right. That's right. That's right. That's right. What you're doing is impacting how they respond.

Speaker 1:

Right. But you have to be in tune with what you're doing in order to be able to do that. Yeah. That's good. That's good.

Speaker 1:

That's good. And, you know, for personal growth, also builds, resilience, right? Being able to overcome challenges and setbacks, you know, but through regulating, you know, your emotions. Right? It's a very powerful thing.

Speaker 1:

And then the last thing is just a sense of well-being. Right? It helps you with your mental health. Right? And your well-being and feeling of happiness.

Speaker 1:

Right? When you are when you feel confident that you're in control of your own emotions and then nobody can manipulate you, right, into doing things. Because let's just face it, some people who are very high in emotional intelligence who don't use it for the right reasons, they will come across at you to make you do things, right, because they wanna drive your behavior. But when you become in control of your own emotions, now you drive your behavior based on how you, you know, you you specifically respond to situations. I mean, any any closing thoughts on that too?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, man. Character matters. Right? That's what we've been talking about the whole time. And I believe when you get in tune with your authentic leader, right?

Speaker 2:

Because we talk about this all the time, right? There's leadership at every level lead from the seat you're in and you begin to, again, you, we talked about being reflective and pondering and just looking back over situations and scenarios, now you have something to measure it against, right? And if those things don't line up, integrity, character, judgment, it doesn't take long to really see that fruit bear itself. Right. And so, yeah, think it's important for you to Ralph's point to get in tune with who you, you know, and who you are.

Speaker 2:

I'm just gonna, you know, when you follow your internal compass, your leadership will be authentic and people will naturally want to associate with you. We got to hone that internal compass. What is that character that we are honing, empathy, what life experiences are driving us. In my case, I've seen folks most closest to me, my mom and my dad serve people, help them achieve beyond what they thought they could achieve. I saw people come in one way and leave another way.

Speaker 2:

So those types of life experiences for me, those were positive. But then again, when we talk about the Starbucks CEO, he had an experience that wasn't so positive but he took that and turned it into something that's changed how things happen in the workspace.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, absolutely. Giving

Speaker 2:

part time folks insurance, that's a huge deal. So let's use those life experiences, really ultimately to, impact the world. Frame our stories.

Speaker 1:

That's right. That's right. And I want to leave with a book reference myself. So this book was very influential for me in developing EQ. It's called How to Have Power I'm sorry, How to Have Confidence and Power When Dealing with People.

Speaker 1:

The author's name is Les, Giblin and he really gives some really, really, really, really good pointers and techniques on how to, engage people, right, to get positive responses by flowing in harmony with human nature and not going against it. Just want to leave that book reference as well.

Speaker 2:

That's great. So Ralph, let me also, True North is Bill George with Peter Sims. This is like the second edition of that, a follow-up. And then the other emotional intelligence that was written, Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, Daniel Goleman.

Speaker 1:

That's good. That's good. All right. All right. Well, another successful episode.

Speaker 1:

Terry, this has been great. We know that this has been a topic we've been talking about for years. Yep. That we continue to develop and and to work on. So we hope that it blesses everybody, and, we will see you on the next one.
