Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Leadership Sovereignty Podcast. I'm your host, Ralph Owens, along with Terry Bailey. In today's episode, we'll touch on topics such as defining what you want and making it time bound, the three e's, education, experience and exposure and the power of the accumulation of micro successes.

Speaker 2:

So as we get beyond that motivation of things, I want this. What's the next step or what's the progression there?

Speaker 3:

Yeah. I would say it's really defining the want. You can say that you want something but what is it that you really want? So that goes with creating a a goal, having an outcome and being very specific about about that outcome. I'm very big on making that a time bound thing.

Speaker 3:

Motivation can be sustained over the long term, but it's not permanent. So while you do have the motivation to go out and do something, you have to define what that thing is and you have to set a timeframe that you're going to go out and achieve it. I would say that's the very that's the next thing. And in order to set up, in my opinion, in order to set a real goal, you got to visualize what it looks like at the end. If you can't see it, it's going to really be hard to define it.

Speaker 3:

So visualize it and then you can define it. Once you have that defined, then there's three elements that I think that you need. Knowledge or education, experience and exposure. Those are the, what I call the three E's education, experience and exposure. Education is really just knowledge.

Speaker 3:

It doesn't mean you have to go sit in a class. It doesn't mean that you have to, you know, learn a certain way. However you learn is the best way for you to go about gaining knowledge. So it's really about gaining knowledge, being a seeker of knowledge to really understand what it is that you're doing. A lot of times athletes are great students of the game.

Speaker 3:

You hear that all the time. This person is a student of the game because they're, they get that knowledge as well as the experience, right? You can do it, play the sport, you can hit the ball off the tee, right? But if you don't understand what it is that you're doing, have some basic level of understanding of what you're doing, you're going to be missing the piece. And then the last piece is exposure.

Speaker 3:

And this can also relate back to motivation. I don't want to get too far, get too far down the line, but it can relate back to motivation because in order for you to unlock that next level of performance and that next level for yourself, you're going to have to make sure that it's not just you that knows what you can do. It's going be important to let some important others know what it is that you do. And those three things along the way, it's not just going to be you, you're going to need other people to help you along the way. You're gonna need those relationships that's gonna be able to help you drive those three Es, education, experience, and exposure.

Speaker 1:

Can I get can I jump in there? So, I just wanna go back to the point that you talked about, define what it looks like and putting a timeline on it. That's some of the hardest things for some of us to do. Right? Because it makes us uneasy when we have an expectation of getting something done at a certain time.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes when it comes to these things that we're motivated and passionate about, we want it to be kind of loose in a, in a timeline. It's like, oh, it's just gonna magically appear, you know, when it happens. No, you gotta put a little bit of pressure on yourself by setting some time restraints. Because when you set time restraints, it will, it will get you to move. Right.

Speaker 1:

So I, I, I just wanna say, I really appreciate that point because, that's something I've had to learn how to do to myself. Right. Hey, I wanna be from here to here and I wanna get it done in this time and I'm gonna put the pressure on myself to get it done. I think it's a fantastic tool. I don't know, Terry, if you had any thoughts on that?

Speaker 2:

Yeah. I wanted to tie back to the statement around, you know, how do we calibrate or what's our compass, right, that helps us define or understand what it is we're shooting for. Right? So, you know, was it a movie? Did you I'll be you know, one of the things that drove me, I loved WarGames.

Speaker 2:

Right? So I'm kind of aging myself here. But, you know, when that computer said, would you do you wanna play a game? And I'm like, that's one of the first times for me when I realized, man, I really I wanna understand how this technology works. I mean, that was basically our introduction or one of our introductions, at least my generation, into AI.

Speaker 2:

Right?

Speaker 1:

And

Speaker 2:

so from there, I'm like, mom, I need a computer. So we got a ColecoVision. I remember getting this I remember getting this manual right. It was DOS. And I had this little girl I liked, man.

Speaker 2:

I'm like, I'm gonna do something with this computer. Man, I got an envelope. Got got an envelope. I'm typing in those commands, man. And I had it typed all the way.

Speaker 2:

It had the little dot matrix printer. And I wrote a message all across this letter and Harold wrote my letter. But again, that was my way of, you know, really kind of diving into technology and actually bringing it into my everyday life. And so really from that point on, man, everything really that I did, there was some component of tech in it, whether it was music, right? Of course, guys know, there's a lot of technology in music, use it there.

Speaker 2:

You know, I liked video and that kind of video production. And so I remember using a lot of technology there. So how do we, how to, you know, kind of kind of dig into that, right? How do, you know, you can't really tell someone how to find their why, but what's the importance around the why? What's, you know, what's driving them?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that's the I would say that's the combination between that motivation and inspiration. And I would say that that combination equals something called passion. Right? We all know there's stuff that we're passionate about. Right?

Speaker 3:

And so that's what you got to find. And I would say that in order to do that, I try to make things really simple. Right? So some next steps, some things that we can we can do. In order to do that, one of the first things I would say to do is to look at what some initial success could be.

Speaker 3:

Like what's something small that you can accomplish. So if we look at that overall, that end goal, like that end vision and maybe somewhere down the line, what's something small that I can accomplish in the next, you put a timeframe on it in the next today, to be like, what

Speaker 1:

can I do today?

Speaker 2:

That's good. Cause I was thinking you used me to say like two weeks, that's do so.

Speaker 3:

That'd today, right? That's gonna further me down that path because success builds on itself. Small successes, right, build on them themselves to turn into that larger accomplishment, right. So small successes build up to become an accomplishment, a larger accomplishment. I think all too often we focus on the larger accomplishment, what we want to accomplish, We skip all those small wins, right?

Speaker 3:

That we can achieve along the way. And so I would say, let's start there. What is something that I can do today that would help me down that path, right? What is a small success I can have? And once you have that one success, that one small success, nobody can take that away from you.

Speaker 3:

That's one that you have, right? And you can lean on that to renew that motivation, right? So renew it every time you have a success to get to that accomplishment. Hopefully that answers the question. Hopefully it wasn't too high level.

Speaker 2:

No, that's perfect. No, I love that, right? Because even personally, right? You have aspirations and dreams and goals. And I think the beauty of understanding the power of micro successes, I think is what I'm hearing.

Speaker 2:

Because so often we are focused on the championship of it, right? But we don't get the joy. And again, this all ties back to the journey, I believe too, right? And I think Ralph, I was listening back to the journey and you made a statement, which was, man, it's so good. It motivates me every day.

Speaker 2:

We tend to miss the micro successes because we're so focused. Or the way you said is we delay satisfaction. Delay our happiness. Right? Because we're not getting the big thing.

Speaker 2:

But if we can enjoy the journey, which are the micro successes and now Hey guys, let's just be totally transparent here too and real. The micro misses because even when we miss, right, there is benefit in the miss because we learn. Right? There is a let's it's everything is not a win and win and win and win and win and win and win. Some of our greatest points of education and knowledge and learning is when we've done something and we didn't actually get the outcome we were exactly looking for.

Speaker 2:

Right? So there are a whole lot of things we get. We get perseverance, we get endurance, we get from, as Zendricko was saying, the people who are helping us, we get the encouragement. Right? Sometimes, man, that miss can lead to a greater opportunity because someone is seeing the level of effort and dedication and commitment that you're putting into it.

Speaker 2:

You know what? I wanna partner with them because they're committed, because I see them not giving up. Right? They're not throwing in the towel. Right?

Speaker 2:

So, man, all

Speaker 1:

of it

Speaker 2:

all of it works together. Right? All of it works together.

Speaker 1:

Terry, I think you said it best once. You said, if it's not working for me, it's working on me. So I'm still waiting.

Speaker 2:

I can't own that, though. Can I own it? That's not mine, but I will pass it on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. You're right. And I think to your point too, you know, because we always tie a spiritual aspect to this. Right? And I heard I heard somebody say this not too long ago.

Speaker 1:

God is more concerned with who you becoming on a day to day basis than he is on the destination. He already got the destination taken care of. Right. The value is in the journey and who you becoming because you have to become the person you need to be to handle the destination. Right.

Speaker 1:

So being able to enjoy, you know, the learning that's happening from day to day, the successes, right? Like you said, there are cumulative that build on top of each other. There is a tremendous amount of value in that. Right? And I'm one that's guilty of, oh, I'll pro I'll I'll I'll I'll wait on my happiness until I'm reached to the destination.

Speaker 1:

You can get happiness out of today just out of being able to get that one win. Right? And know that that's actually building you towards where you need to go. So, yeah, I think that's, I think that's so powerful. Thank you for listening to the Leadership Sovereignty Podcast.
