Right now two people at your company are doing the same job. One is quietly using AI every day. In 12 months one of them will be promoted. The question is — which one will you be?

In Part 1 of the Leadership Sovereignty Podcast's eight-part GenAI series, host Ralph Owens and co-host Terry Baylor lay the foundation for one of the most practical series the show has ever produced. This is not a conversation about technology. It is a conversation about career advantage — and why every professional regardless of role, industry, or technical background needs to understand what AI can do right now.

Ralph breaks down exactly how generative AI works — not as a magic intelligence, but as a supercharged autocomplete that predicts the next word based on everything it has ever read. That single reframe changes how you use it. Terry shares how AI has accelerated his ability to get in front of audiences, build business frameworks, and process ideas faster than ever before. They also share why AI is not something to be afraid of — and why the professionals who embrace it early are already pulling away from everyone sitting next to them.

This is Part 1 of 8. By the time you finish this series you will understand exactly how to use AI daily, how to protect yourself from its risks, and how to leverage it to accelerate your career in ways your coworkers have not even considered yet.

What you will learn in this episode:
- How generative AI actually works — explained simply for any professional in any role
- Why AI is already being used by someone at your company and what that means for you
- How AI supercharges your imagination and accelerates your learning in real time
- Why the better your question the more powerful your result — and what that means for your career
- A preview of everything this eight-part series will teach you

This episode is for you if:
- You have heard about AI but are not sure how it actually applies to your career
- You want to understand the real competitive threat before it passes you by
- You are not technical but want practical ways to start using AI immediately
- You are ready to be the one who gets promoted — not the one who watches it happen

Ralph Owens (00:00)
right now two people at your company are doing the same job, but one is quietly using GEN AI every day. ⁓ and in 12 months, one of them will be promoted. Right. The question is, which one will you be?

And we are live. Hello world. Welcome to another episode of Leadership Sovereignty. Terry, how you feeling?

Terry Baylor (00:39)
Feeling great, man. Excited about this topic. I think it's ⁓ one that the audience is going to really enjoy ⁓ because ⁓ it's the hot topic, ⁓ man, probably going to be for the next, I don't know how many years, because it's changing.

Ralph Owens (00:55)
Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We created the show so we can give back to, you know, the listeners, especially those things that we believe would be helpful for you and your careers and your life. this is definitely one that's changing everybody's world, ⁓ whether they know it or not. And you don't want to be caught on the wrong side of this conversation. Right. So, the title of this show is, ⁓ how GEN AI is now your competitive advantage at work.

So let's just talk about AI. AI is in coming. It's already here for those who don't already know. ⁓ It's changing the workplace and the professionals who learn how to use it effectively and effectively is the key word. Again, promoted faster, leading smarter and more strategically. I mean, what's your thoughts on that, Tire?

Terry Baylor (01:40)
Yeah, it man, look, it's like having a man, a new best friend, and what you share with it, right? It has the ability to enhance, So just like think of it as that best friend and certain intimate things that you want to share with that best friend so you can get feedback, you can get encouragement, you can have someone

that you can rely on right now in the same breath, right? ⁓ You get the information back, you hear back from your friend, and then you analyze what they told you, right? None of us just takes blankedly the advice we get back, right? So you have to, I love this term, Trust but verify, right?

Ralph Owens (02:26)
That's good. That's good.

Yes,

that's going to come up again in the show.

Terry Baylor (02:39)
So, it does, is it a game changer for you? Yes. Is it something that you should be afraid of? No. Right. As long as you put yourself in a position really to just learn, right? That's what, you know, if you're on this podcast, then GEN.AI is perfect for you because you're putting yourself in a position to learn, get something, right? That's going to enhance your life. And it's just another tool ⁓ that you can have to help advance you.

Yep, great topic.

Ralph Owens (03:09)
Yeah,

that's great topic. Great topic. So right now two people at your company are doing the same job, but one is quietly using GEN AI every day. ⁓ and in 12 months, one of them will be promoted. Right. The question is, which one will you be? So that's something to think about, right? You know, somebody's using GEN.AI on your job right now, whereas you may not be because you're not even aware that of what it can do to enhance your ability to perform.

Right. And that person who's becoming more familiar with it, more efficient with it, they're going to receive more opportunities for promotion because AI is being ingrained into every part of every business. So this, this episode is basically a roadmap to practical, safe and career accelerating ways to use gen AI. So some of the things you're going to learn about is how does gen AI really work? Right. What can it do and what can it not do? How to use gen AI daily.

to work smarter, communicate better, and to promote faster. Why learning prompt engineering is critical to unlocking GEN.AI's full power. How to protect yourself and your company from data leaks, which is the biggest risk of using GEN.AI. And a clear breakdown of one of our favorite tools, JAT GPT's tiers and features. So you could choose the right tool for yourself. So we'll go ahead and jump right in. So let's start off with how GEN.AI works. Terry, you want to?

Want to take that one?

Terry Baylor (04:40)
So here's the thing, right? Educate those, our goal is to educate those who are unfamiliar and set a realistic expectation about what it is, right? So here's the thing, GNI is trained on massive databases of text, code, and images. It predicts the next most likely word or pixel, right? So it's again, it's

It's like having a best friend who can lead you because ⁓ they have the ability to look at this large data set of information. And so instead of, you you spending, let's just say, for example, 30 minutes writing this email, right. You give it the context, right. Of what it is you want to say.

Ralph Owens (05:19)
Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Terry Baylor (05:35)
Right. You give it the framework of what type of personality you want to write it in. I write it in a friendly tone. Right. And all you're doing is again, ⁓ giving it basically kind of some, you know, bread, breadcrumb trails on what exactly you need to get to where you want to get. Right. So, I don't know, Ralph, what do you think about that?

Ralph Owens (05:42)
Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Yeah. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's an amazing concept to really grasp in that, ⁓ generative AI is not intelligent. Okay. People think it is, but it's not to Terry's point. Imagine a computer that has been able to read everything on the internet, all the billions of websites, billions of books, everything images, it analyzed everything.

And when you ask it something, it's basically predicting what the next word should be based on what it read before in the past. It doesn't intelligently say, no, this doesn't make sense. That's all it's doing is predicting. think of it as like a, you can think of a, GEN AI. It's like a supercharged auto-complete, right? You know how we have auto-complete in email now where it sees a couple of words, right? And then it just automatically puts more words because it's predicting what you're going to say next. That's what GEN AI basically does.

Terry Baylor (06:47)
That's a great example.

Ralph Owens (06:55)
This is why even though it's faster, right? And it's broader, it's still dependent upon your direction. You can't allow it to come up with its own concepts because it will only do what it can predict. So what can you do with it? You can draft summaries. You can come up with ideas. Like, hey, I got an idea for this. What do you think about that? And out of all the billions of lines of words that it's read,

it'll come back and give you some things that really make sense. here's the thing, it does it so much faster than we can do on our own, right? And that's where the value is. You gonna say something?

Terry Baylor (07:34)
Sure. And

yeah, yeah, do. So think, man, look, I love this. And we've talked about this in the past, right? ⁓ We have one of the greatest abilities on the face of the earth. Quite honestly, it's a superpower and it's your imagination, right? Gen.ai.

is able to expound upon your imagination. Right? So as creative as you can be, it can ⁓ supercharge. I love that term, right? It can supercharge your creativity, right? As far out of the box that you can think.

Ralph Owens (08:08)
Yes.

Yes.

Terry Baylor (08:32)
Right? As creative as you are, you can now start to deliver those ideas in a much faster ⁓ manner. And it's incredible to be able to do that. I'll just say personally, it's allowed me to ⁓ get in front of ⁓ audiences quicker than I would have been able to get in front of them before. Right? ⁓

Ralph Owens (08:58)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Terry Baylor (09:00)
speaking, whether I'm presenting, whether I'm speaking with a client, ⁓ whether this podcast, right? It allows me to formulate and get to the complete idea of what it is I'm trying to accomplish or communicate faster. So it's supercharged my output.

Ralph Owens (09:16)
Yes. Yes.

Yes. Yes. So let's just dig into that for a second. ⁓ Let's just say you have an idea. Let's just say you want to respond to an email. Let's just give a simple ⁓ example. And how many times have we taken the time to write an email, and then we scratch it and we rewrite it again? And then we scratch it and rewrite it again? Because we want to make sure we address the right topics, but we want to have the right tone, all of those different things.

What if you could tell Gen.A.I., write me an email response in this tone that covers these things, and it gets it 99 % perfect in a second? Think about how much faster you can process time, right? How much faster you can process ideas to Terry's point, right? So it is your supercharged superpower as compared to someone who's not using it, right? And I think this is the...

the concept that you really have to gather and hold to as we go through this show is that everything that we're teaching you is already being done by somebody that you work with, but you also have to compare what the experience is to the person who's not. And then you'll see the true advantage to being able to use GEN.AI. Something that we like to say is that GEN.AI doesn't know things. It patterns words based off what it reads. So you are the thinker.

GEN.AI is just a tool. All so that's something to keep in mind.

Terry Baylor (10:41)
Sure. For sure.

And one of the things that has been an unforeseen benefit ⁓ just in my day-to-day experiences with it is the amount of information that it comes back with. So now by default, my knowledge base has increased again, because the amount of time it would take for me to research these topics, right? And to

Ralph Owens (11:05)
Yes.

Yes.

Terry Baylor (11:10)
narrow it down to, ⁓ you know, what that finer point is, it would, it would just, it's, I don't know, man, it could be 10 to one. It could be 10 to one easily 10 to one. Right. So instead of me spending an hour on it, right. I'm spending six minutes on it, you know, two minutes on it. So the ability to get the information back and, here's another

Ralph Owens (11:20)
Easily. Easily. Yes.

Mm hmm. That's right. That's right. That's right.

Terry Baylor (11:40)
key component that I want to be sure to emphasize. Your level of expertise in the area that ⁓ you've been trained in or that you are being trained in, that level of expertise is important when dealing with Gen AI. And we're going to get into that because there are going to be times where you will have to better shape

what it is that it's brought back. Some things are spot on, right? Based on what it is you're trying to communicate. Then other things, you're going to have to leverage your expertise to frame or to voice rather, the information in the most appropriate way based on the audience that you're speaking with or based on the context of what's being requested for that outcome.

Ralph Owens (12:26)
Yeah.

Terry Baylor (12:31)
It does not replace your expertise, right? It doesn't replace your creativity and it doesn't replace your expertise. What it will do, and you're going to hear this word time and time again, it'll just supercharge.

Ralph Owens (12:35)
That's right.

Yes. Yes. Which makes it a competitive advantage to, again, those people who are not. So professionals are using GEN.AI to deliver faster, cleaner, and more strategic work. And leadership notices that. When you can come back with an idea that's fully thought out, that clearly articulates the right points, and you can do it in a fraction of the time that other people are doing, guess what? You stand out.

Right. you know, so fluency over AI is a key skill for advancement at this point. So I'll use myself as an example. Um, anytime that I'm now trying to learn something new, I'm using AI to accelerate my learning process. Right. So whereas, and, and, let me say this real quick, the difference between Google and a gen AI is when you type something in Google up until recently,

It gave you a whole list of all of these different options to click on. You had to go into each one to figure out which one was right for you. GEN.ai has given you the specific answer, right? Immediately. Right? So think about how much time that saves you. Now in Google, they're using, have GEN.ai built into it. Jim and I is giving you the answer on top, so you don't have to look at all the links, but think about how much fast that accelerates your learning. So what if I'm learning, you know, just, I'm looking into

our podcasting, right? Always trying to figure out how to do it better, how to get a cleaner picture and things of that nature. I'm having conversations with Chad GPT about, Hey, this is what I'm doing currently right now. How could I make it better? It gives me spot on information. And then I say, well, tell me a little bit more about that. And then tell me a little bit more about that. My knowledge is accelerating so much faster than if I had to look through every individual link, right? So I'm really, really want to make sure that our listeners really catch this.

Terry Baylor (14:33)
For sure.

Ralph Owens (14:40)
Right. This accelerates your knowledge learning so much faster that the person you're sitting next to, right. You're going to go right past them because they can't keep up. Right. So that's one of the great, the great things like I, you know, Terry knows I have some meta glasses and a meta is a large language model or a genitive AI model is called llama and llama is built into the glasses. So I'm literally like when I take my dog for a walk,

I'll just start talking about a topic and it's just accelerating my learning, accelerating my learning. I didn't have to pick up one book, right? You know, I didn't have to read through a hundred pages to try to get to this one nugget. I get it immediately. So now I'm building on top of everything that I'm learning and it's accelerating the learning process. mean, any thoughts on that, Ter?

Terry Baylor (15:26)
Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. I'll share a story. So just this week, right? Noah, he loves to do, 3d animation. And so he's got a piece of software that he's been using and in order to, ⁓ get the most out of this application, he actually does coding and, Python. And so, ⁓ so he was, you know, he had ran into an error message and he said, dad, you know, I would normally

use YouTube to figure out what was going on. But he has that Baylor Jean, Ralph and Yule, this will bring back some memories for you. He was like, Dad, I was not going to bed until I figured this out. Does that sound familiar?

Ralph Owens (16:11)

yeah, he that from his daddy.

Terry Baylor (16:16)
And

he was like, I just couldn't rest. he said, so I decided to use AI. So we've been having a lot of philosophical conversations around AI. so just great dialogue. So anyway, he goes, I decided to use AI. So I took the error message and I threw it into AI. it came back with, here's the place in your code that needs to be fixed. Well, he said, dad, it didn't necessarily fix it because there were some other things I needed to do.

to the point, right, that we spoke about earlier, his creativity and his knowledge base still needed to be leveraged in order to resolve the issue because it didn't necessarily fix it, but it got him in the right area where the fix needed to occur. But here's where the benefit was. Then ChatGBT came back and said, well, you know what the version of, I forget the name of the application he's using, but the version that you're using, if you upgrade to 3.6,

It would be much faster and better. And he said, dad, I didn't know that. So he went, did the upgrade, right? And he was like, ⁓ man, man, now my, ⁓ my, my, my 3d modeling, those things are now processing so much faster since I've upload, since I've upgraded. Right? So again, that's one of those scenarios. Again, if he would have gone out to YouTube, he probably would have found the answer, but now he's got to listen to somebody talk. You know how.

Ralph Owens (17:22)
Mm-hmm.

Terry Baylor (17:45)
granted now, I don't want to be, you know, disparity platform, but people talk and don't get you right to the point because they want to keep you on because they want to get more like that. We are not doing that. We're getting you the meat as soon as possible and we're getting to the point as soon as possible. But, know, so they'll, you know, they'll drag it on a bit. And, ⁓ but the fact that he went to gen AI, ⁓ I'm sorry, chat GBT and use gen AI, right. To get to the resolution.

Ralph Owens (17:49)
Mm-hmm.

Yes. Yes.

That's right. That's Yeah.

Mm-hmm.

Terry Baylor (18:14)
Not only was he able to get to the resolution sooner, but he also received an additional nugget that allowed him to take action and to improve the process. again, that's just a real life ⁓ scenario. I got another story I'll share a little later on. But yeah, there's so much that you're going to get out of it that you don't even bargain for. And I've had that experience as well.

Ralph Owens (18:21)
Mm-hmm.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yes.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm. Yeah, I think that's a great example. And just to make sure we clarify for the listeners, this doesn't have to be a techie thing, just because we are into technology. If you were a gardener and you wanted to understand how to better feed your plants, things that it can give you information on anything, no matter what you do.

Terry Baylor (18:52)
Correct. Yes.

Real

life, real dude. Okay. I got another story, right? My wife gardens. she basically said, Hey, I think there's something called plot planting. And she got into the details of plot planting. It's like where you segment out, know, Shamika's got two raised beds in the back, four by eight raised beds. And she research plots.

Ralph Owens (19:08)
Yeah,

all right.

Mm. Mm-hmm.

Terry Baylor (19:27)
planting. And, ⁓ yes, it's not, this is not a techie thing. This, whatever topic that you're interested in, it can assist you in that topic. Right. Right. Yeah, go ahead. Yes.

Ralph Owens (19:33)
Right.

Yes, yes, yes. Especially career growth, especially career

growth, right? Right. And this is what we really trying to hone in to you all is that no matter what your role is, you could tell it about your role and what you do on a daily basis and ask it to help train you, right? To be promoted and give you steps on to get to the next level. Right. You know, so yeah, no, fantastic story though. Fantastic story.

Terry Baylor (20:06)
Yeah.

And here's the thing, right? This goes back to one of the fundamental things, that we've talked about all the time, right? Good leaders ask great questions. This is a great place to ask great, the better your question, the more rich your information is going to be, right? And Raph's going to get into this, right? Where we get into prompt engineering and things and it's all about how well

Ralph Owens (20:12)
Mm.

yes. Yeah. that's good.

Yes.

Yes.

Terry Baylor (20:35)
of question are you asking? How well of a series of questions are you? mean, so anyway, yeah, man, get, so get those questions ready.

Ralph Owens (20:39)
Mm.

Yeah, no, it's good.
