Speaker 1:This next step though, Ralph, this is what really challenged me and encouraged me. Motivation and encouragement by connecting your goals to your personal story. I love this To your personal story increases your emotional investment, making you more motivated and committed to achieving them. I was like, Oh, that is
Speaker 2:That's good.
Speaker 1:I'd never I'm thinking I feel better about them goals already. I haven't even written them.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's good.
Speaker 1:Right? To know that you're gonna be connected to them because you've tied them to who you are as a person and not just objectify them to the, organization. Yeah. Yeah. But they're about you.
Speaker 1:I'm sorry.
Speaker 2:Go ahead. No. I'm just saying it it just it creates motivation for yourself. Right? When you when you tie that goal to who you are.
Speaker 2:Right? And where you wanna go. So it's not so hard to try to achieve because, again, we learned in personal development one zero one, how to win friends and influence people. How did how did he put it? People will move mountains, to do something for themselves.
Speaker 1:Oh, yes.
Speaker 2:But to do something for you, you know, is is a hard thing to do. Right? So we are all, in hate in I'm sorry. That's not the right word. Innately.
Speaker 2:Innately. We're all innately selfish. Right? So we we're driven by the things that are that bet that benefit us. Right?
Speaker 2:So if you can tie that objective and that goal into something that you want and who you are, you're gonna have more energy. Right? That's probably a great word and more energy to be able to to go after it. Tenaciously. Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yes. Tenaciously. You know? Yeah, I love that. Yes, no more energy.
Speaker 1:That's great. And so, know, right, as you tie these things together, right, so it's going to build number three consistency and authenticity. Right? It's gonna be real.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 1:Right? You're gonna be more keen to it because you've connected it to yourself. Right?
Speaker 2:That's right.
Speaker 1:And it's gonna be genuine. So, the other aspect of that, right, Ralph, which I really like, which is it's going to increase your resilience. Right.
Speaker 2:When the
Speaker 1:challenge comes, because they're going to come it's life. Right.
Speaker 2:That's right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The next point is, it enhanced your communication.
Speaker 2:Right? So, a coherent narrative helps you articulate your goals effectively. Right? A coherent that's that's really it's very clear in your mind. Right?
Speaker 2:So it makes it easier to articulate it better. You're not stumbling and trying to figure out how you want to say this. To your point, Terry, you you gave your personal narrative just right off the top. Right? Because once when it's a part of you, it becomes easier to communicate.
Speaker 1:Yes. Yes, yes. And here's the thing too, right? I love about it. It's it's it allows for you to articulate in a way where people can understand it.
Speaker 1:Right?
Speaker 2:That's right. That's right. Right. That's right. And people know, you know, we've all seen a person who has tried to give us a pitch that they just did from memory and one that comes from a person who's speaking from their experience.
Speaker 2:You can see the difference between those two scenarios very, very, very easily. So once it's a part of you, you can be able to communicate it from a part of you. Right? And not, you know, a scripted, you know, whatever you're just gonna read just to give them an answer.
Speaker 1:So so I'm a help you all out with that. It's soul music, man. Soul is coming from the essence of who you are. So I cannot get out of this without a little Bob. Raph, challenged me.
Speaker 1:And so I've been in them proverbs bro and it's like
Speaker 2:Life changing, man.
Speaker 1:It is life changing. You know what? I'm just look, this is a sidebar. I told my wife, I said, I did not know this. It says, it's your good bones.
Speaker 1:It's good for health. I'm like, what? I'm like, this stuff is good. Anyway, I won't get too far off. Here's the thing too on that.
Speaker 1:The reason back to the soul comment Proverbs, right? The Bible says guard your heart with all diligence. Why does it say that? Because out of it flows your issues of life.
Speaker 2:That's right.
Speaker 1:But let's turn that around. My passions are on the inside, they're in my heart. So I'm guarding it from the things that shouldn't be in there, of the things that are in there that should be in there, I want those to come out. Because out of it comes now there's one interpretation issues of life. We can also say comes out of your desires, successes, right?
Speaker 1:Your goals, right? The things that you're involved in, they're gonna come out of there. So when you when you practice this and you tie your goals to who you are and it comes out of your heart, out of the soul area of who you are, how will you how well will you be able to articulate that?
Speaker 2:I I I got a great example for that. So, for those who don't know, I play bass guitar. And, when I would learn songs, there will be times where I could play a song just simply from memory of the notes. Right? But my goal was always to get a level past that.
Speaker 2:I wanted the music to become a part of me. So I practiced it and listened to every nuance of every note and rhythm so much to the point to where so, like, leading up to an event, maybe the the the the three days before, that's the only thing I listen to. I don't listen to anything else. That's all I listen to Because I wanted to become so ingrained into who I am Mhmm. That when I'm playing it back, I'm not playing from memory.
Speaker 2:I'm playing from who I am. So now I've taken that music and I've mixed myself into it, which is why now I can articulate something that, yeah, he's playing the song, but it got a little feel to it. Right? That's because that's me in it. Right?
Speaker 1:Yes, Yes, Hey, hey. Let me say, I didn't felt that. You know what I'm saying? I've been on the receiving end. Yes, sir.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Yeah. But that that's what reminds me when you talk about that enhanced communication. When it becomes a part of you, it now takes on it it now becomes something different. It's the goal plus you and all of the individualistic creativity and passions that you have that go along with that now produces something completely different.
Speaker 2:Yeah. It's still the goal, but it's goal with a little edge on it, with a little feel on it. Right? With a little hump to it. Right?
Speaker 2:You know, those kinds of things because you've now integrated yourself into it.
Speaker 1:I love what you called that though. You said enhanced communication. I love that. And so when we get past that, you know, tangible area, right? And what we're talking about is that in intangible area, right?
Speaker 1:Where you are really conveying your, you know, your heart is in essence. So that's awesome. And here's the overall benefit of that. One overall is that strategic alignment in a corporate context, aligning that with your personal narrative, with your goals ensures a broader organizational objectives are going to be met. And you get buy in from your leader because they see that, you know what, this person is actually pouring their heart and soul into this.
Speaker 2:Yep. Yep. Yep. That's good, man. That's good.
Speaker 2:That's good. All right. So let's see where we're going to go next here. So as part of some practical tips, you can try to connect those goals again to your past successions and your your vision statement. You wanna seek feedback, right?
Speaker 2:Take some time to after you formulate them, sit back. I mean, be purposeful in talking to someone that you trust. Recite those goals to them, those smart goals to them and and get some feedback, right, so that they can help you with that. And then you need to review and adjust those goals on a regular basis. So once you've once you've gotten buy in from your leader and you agree that, okay, this goal is definitely, relative to your role and, it does define success, now you have to, schedule your regular check ins on your progress and your, narrative alignment.
Speaker 2:This is the piece too that I think sometimes people really miss, that, you know, the preparation part of a goal is basically what we're what we've been talking about. But yes, the check ins and the and the realignments are just as critical as the actual preparation of the goal itself. Right? Because if you don't check-in on it so I'll give you an example. So if you have a goal for twelve months and you wait till month six to do a check-in with your leader against everything that you've done from January to June, just to find out, just to have your leader tell you you've been going in the wrong direction the whole time.
Speaker 2:You've lost a half year worth of time to be able to change your direction. Now imagine if you were checking in once a month and your leader told you in January, hey, you're going in the wrong direction. You need to go this direction. Now you've only lost thirty days and you could change your direction to better align towards the goal to ensure that you actually meet the goal. I mean, what were your thoughts on that, Teri?
Speaker 1:Yeah, Ralph, that goes back honestly to the mid year check-in, right?
Speaker 2:That
Speaker 1:principle, right? We want and here's the thing. Let me let me let me tie something else into that as much as we want that to check-in with that leader. You're going to be checking in with yourself, Because if you are keeping track and it's a smart goal because it's time based, so let's go back to what we were doing. It was specific, it was measurable.
Speaker 1:So if you're measuring it, right, you're going to know that. Right. And so part of that measurement is reporting it up. So let let's just think about that being a normal nuance of the process. Right?
Speaker 1:But to your point, Raphael, we do not wanna just set it. Look. This is don't know. What was it? Set it and forget it.
Speaker 1:This is not that.
Speaker 2:And actually, to your to your point. Right? So if we've already figured out how we're measuring success, this is where your metrics come in. Right? This is your metrics document that you're creating on a monthly basis to track your performance.
Speaker 2:So you should be able to take that and actually bring that to your leader and say, hey, this is what I've been able to accomplish based on these SMART goals that we created that have these measurements already in place. This goes back to a previous episode that we talked about, creating your metrics and letting that data drive, your value to the organization. So, yeah, I think this ties directly into that.
